Leadership in Focus:
A Q&A with Executive Director Ben Engle

We鈥檙e proud to introduce Ben Engle as the new Executive Director of 亚洲天堂. Ben brings over a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, global health, education equity, and community-based systems. Most recently, he has worked to expand food security programs and global access to life-saving therapies.

As he steps into this new role, we want you鈥攐ur partners, donors, and friends鈥攖o get to know the person behind the title. Outgoing Executive Director Amanda Sherlip sat down with Ben for a candid conversation about his background, what inspires him, and what he hopes to bring to this next chapter of our shared mission.

Amanda: Hi Ben. It鈥檚 wonderful to have the chance to sit down with you for a proper chat. From our very first meeting and throughout this transition, it has been a real pleasure getting to know you 鈥搉ot just as a professional, but as a person. I鈥檓 excited for our community to do the same, and to hear more about the values and vision you bring to this chapter of 亚洲天堂.

Ben: Thank you, Amanda. That truly means a lot. It鈥檚 been a joy working with you and getting to know the organization more during this transition. I鈥檝e felt incredibly welcomed and well supported. I’m excited for what lies ahead and grateful for the strong foundation that鈥檚 been built. I look forward to working closely with our partners and communities to keep advancing the mission in meaningful ways.

A: Let鈥檚 start with what everyone鈥檚 curious about 鈥 what drew you to 亚洲天堂 and its mission?

B: Great question. I鈥檝e spent my career in mission-driven roles, from food access to rare disease advocacy, and what has always fueled me is the chance to create systems that help people thrive. When I learned about 亚洲天堂, I was immediately drawn to the simplicity and power of its mission: providing books and literacy support to children who need them most. Literacy is foundational鈥攊t unlocks opportunity, independence, and voice. The impact Hands has had across the Caribbean is both inspiring and humbling, and I feel honored to now be part of its story.

A: You bring a thoughtful range of experience to this role. Looking back, what parts of your career feel most foundational to this transition?

B: That鈥檚 something I鈥檝e thought about a lot. I started my nonprofit career in rare disease and ALS advocacy, where I led large-scale fundraising programs, built global partnerships, and coordinated complex logistics for community-driven events. More recently, I helped grow a food security nonprofit through a period of explosive demand, and then worked in biotech helping patients around the world gain access to cutting-edge therapies. Across all of these roles, I鈥檝e built programs from the ground up, scaled operations, and worked closely with community stakeholders. I bring with me a mix of entrepreneurial spirit and operational discipline that I believe will serve 亚洲天堂 well as we look to deepen our impact.

A: What does literacy mean to you, personally and professionally?

B: Personally, reading has always been a doorway for me鈥攆rom understanding the world as a kid growing up in New England, to building a career grounded in learning, communication, and service. Now, as a father to two young daughters, ages 3 and 5, it鈥檚 taken on an even deeper meaning. I read to them every single day. It鈥檚 one of the most joyful parts of my life鈥攕haring stories, watching their imaginations spark, and helping them discover language, empathy, and curiosity through books.

Professionally, I see literacy as one of the most powerful tools for equity. When a child can read, they can dream, advocate, and navigate the world. That鈥檚 part of why I鈥檝e been so involved in my community, including serving on the board of Ashmont Nursery School, where I help ensure we鈥檙e creating a nurturing environment that supports children of all backgrounds. I believe that every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to books and the opportunity to fall in love with reading. It鈥檚 the foundation upon which opportunity is built, and it鈥檚 what makes this work so profoundly important.

A: What are your first impressions of the organization and its impact so far?

B: Honestly, I鈥檝e been really impressed. 亚洲天堂 is lean, deeply mission-focused, and incredibly effective. The Literacy Links, with your leadership and support, have built strong relationships and programs with schools and communities, and the results speak for themselves鈥攖housands of children with access to books and literacy support who might otherwise go without. I鈥檓 struck by the integrity of the work and the deep respect the organization has earned from its partners.

A: With that lens, how do you see your leadership style contributing to this next phase of 亚洲天堂?

B: That鈥檚 something I care deeply about. I lead with curiosity, transparency, and a deep respect for the people doing the work on the ground. I also bring a systems mindset鈥攍ooking for ways we can scale thoughtfully, build sustainable processes, and use data to make informed decisions. I hope to foster a collaborative culture where staff, donors, educators, and children feel seen, heard, and empowered.

A: And looking ahead, what are your top priorities for these early days?

B:Listening, learning, and building relationships. I want to understand the heart of the organization鈥攆rom the perspectives of staff, board members, community partners, and the educators we serve. I鈥檒l also be looking closely at our operations and development strategies to identify opportunities to strengthen our infrastructure and prepare for future growth.

A: Hands is deeply rooted in communities across diverse island nations, each with its own rich culture, context, strengths, and priorities. How do you approach leadership across varied cultural settings with sensitivity and effectiveness?

B: That鈥檚 such an important question. I鈥檝e learned that effective cross-cultural leadership starts with humility鈥攔ecognizing that I鈥檓 not the expert in anyone else鈥檚 experience. Whether working with people living with rare disease and their families across borders or collaborating on food justice initiatives in Greater Boston, I鈥檝e seen the power of listening first, showing up consistently, and letting trust build through shared work. I aim to be a supportive partner, staying grounded in curiosity, being open to correction, and understanding that real collaboration often takes more time and care than quick fixes allow.

At 亚洲天堂, I see the Literacy Links as cultural bridges and essential community leaders. My role is to amplify their insights, advocate for their needs, and help remove barriers so they can do their work with autonomy and impact. I don鈥檛 come with all the answers but I do come with respect for the strengths already present and a commitment to supporting solutions that grow from within.

A: What are you most curious to learn from the team, our partners, and the communities we serve?

B: There鈥檚 so much I鈥檓 eager to learn. I want to understand the lived experiences behind the numbers鈥攈ow our books are used, what literacy looks like in different communities, and what educators and students need most. I鈥檓 also looking forward to learning how the team has maintained such a high level of impact with a relatively small team鈥攊t鈥檚 clearly a place where passion meets precision.

A: Shifting gears, what is one book that鈥檚 left a lasting mark on you?

B:One book that really stands out to me is听Salt听by Mark Kurlansky. I really love food history and this book is the story of how this one everyday staple shaped courses of human history: fueling empires, creating trade routes, even starting wars. What鈥檚 fascinating is how something so simple that we take for granted in our everyday lives turns out to be central to so many complex systems. It鈥檚 a great reminder that small things can have an outsized impact, and that looking deeper often reveals connections that really matter.

A: Outside of work, what keeps you grounded or inspired?

B: Spending time with my family, cooking, gardening, and hiking all keep me grounded. I also love being involved in my community鈥攚hether through my volunteer work at my community school or just being an engaged neighbor. Those everyday connections remind me why I do this work.

A: Ben, thank you for taking the time to share more about yourself and your vision. I know our community will appreciate the chance to hear directly from you, and I鈥檓 confident this marks the beginning of a strong and thoughtful next chapter for Hands.

B: Thanks again, Amanda. I鈥檓 honored to be part of this era of Hands and deeply appreciative of the trust being placed in me. I鈥檓 excited for the work ahead -and even more so for the impact we鈥檒l continue to make together.

Leadership Transition Letter
From Amanda Sherlip

If we鈥檝e seemed a little quieter than usual lately, it鈥檚 because we鈥檝e been hard at work鈥really hard at work. While programs across the Eastern Caribbean have continued to thrive thanks to our remarkable in-island teams, those of us on the U.S. side have been focused on preparing 亚洲天堂 for its next chapter.

Today, I鈥檓 writing to share something deeply personal and profoundly meaningful: I will soon be transitioning out of my role as Executive Director.

It鈥檚 hard to put into words what these past five years have meant to me. From the very beginning, this wasn鈥檛 just a role鈥攊t was a calling. Something in my heart told me that if I didn鈥檛 say yes to Hands, something important might be lost. And so I jumped in with both feet, determined to ensure the survival and success of this beautiful, mission-driven organization that believes every child deserves the joy of reading and the promise of a bright future.

What we鈥檝e built together has been nothing short of transformational. We turned programs into institutions. We moved from having to convince people that libraries matter to being flooded with requests from schools eager to join the movement. We grew from a patchwork of efforts into a cohesive organization with shared purpose and unified vision.

We expanded and enhanced the CLASS program into a true pillar of literacy and community partnership. We introduced the Early Pages Programme, ensuring that the power of reading begins not at age five, but far earlier鈥攔eaching parents, caregivers, and toddlers at a time when it can shape the entire trajectory of their lives. These programs are quickly becoming models for how to build scalable, replicable early childhood literacy initiatives鈥攐nes that not only foster a love of reading, but also cultivate meaningful parental involvement and community engagement through child-centered learning.

Our work also expanded into regional advocacy and systems-level leadership. For the past five years, I have had the privilege of serving on the OECS Regional Education Group as a development partner, contributing to the advancement of education policy in the region. In 2023, I was honored to serve as a , helping to represent the role of literacy in regional education planning. That same year, I was invited to present the Early Pages Programme at the UNICEF鈥揙ECS Learning Conference, introducing our model to education leaders from 12 regional countries. These opportunities allowed 亚洲天堂 to contribute meaningfully to regional strategy鈥攑ositioning literacy not only as an essential academic skill, but as a critical foundation for lifelong development, equity, and opportunity throughout the Eastern Caribbean.

Behind the scenes, I also had the privilege of overseeing complex international operations. Over these past five years, I led the coordination of large-scale book shipments across six countries, navigated shipping disruptions, customs regulations, and international procurement challenges, and ensured program continuity through global supply chain crises, a pandemic, and natural disasters. These efforts weren鈥檛 glamorous鈥攂ut they were essential. They made it possible for our Literacy Links to deliver, for teachers to be equipped, and for children to have access to the books and resources they deserve.

Together, we navigated disaster after disaster鈥攙olcanic eruptions, hurricanes, pandemics鈥攁nd never wavered in our belief that books, stories, and literacy are not luxuries, but lifelines.

This next season of growth for 亚洲天堂 will be led by a new Executive Director. I had the privilege of guiding the hiring process as a consultant, alongside our Board Chair and Vice Chair, and I can say with confidence that the organization is in strong and capable hands. I will remain on throughout the month of May as an Executive Consultant to support a smooth transition and continue working closely with the board and incoming ED to maintain momentum.

I鈥檓 also honored to share that I have been named Director Emeritus鈥攁 legacy title that reflects my ongoing connection to Hands as a friend, partner, and lifelong champion.

“As Board Chair, it is both an honor and a privilege to recognize the extraordinary leadership of our outgoing Executive Director, Amanda Sherlip. Over the past five years, Amanda has transformed 亚洲天堂 into a beacon of innovation, resilience, and impact. Her unwavering dedication, strategic vision, and compassionate leadership have not only strengthened our programs鈥攖hey have expanded our reach, deepened our relationships, and elevated our mission to new heights. We are immensely grateful for her tireless efforts and the countless lives she has touched through her commitment. While we will deeply miss her daily presence, her legacy will continue to guide and inspire us as she transitions into the role of Director Emeritus.”
Leah Garratt, Board Chair, 亚洲天堂

This title is deeply meaningful to me. 亚洲天堂 has helped shape who I am鈥攁s a leader, a person, and a mother. I鈥檝e had the privilege of working with so many of you鈥攄onors, educators, community partners, and volunteers鈥攚ho have become part of my extended family. Thank you for the trust you鈥檝e placed in me, for the boldness of your belief in this mission, and for the countless ways you鈥檝e shown up for the children we serve.

This is not a goodbye. It鈥檚 a transition. And it鈥檚 a celebration.

Thank you for the honor of walking this path with me. I hope you鈥檒l continue walking with Hands in the years to come.

With love and deep appreciation,

Amanda Sherlip
Executive Director (for just a little longer)
Director Emeritus, 亚洲天堂

A Year of Hope and Resilience: Reviving Literacy in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

This year, as St. Vincent and the Grenadines faced the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the ongoing effects of a global pandemic, and the lingering scars of a volcanic eruption, 亚洲天堂 (Hands), the Mustique Charitable Foundation (MCF), and our dedicated community of partners and friends came together to help reignite hope and opportunity through the power of education. In a world where uncertainty often feels like the norm, our partnership has shown how, even in the darkest of times, there is a spark of light鈥攑owered by community, resilience, and a shared commitment to the future of our children.

Rising from the Ashes: The Power of Collaboration

The year 2024鈥2025 was one of recovery and rebuilding, not just of schools and infrastructure, but of spirits. The effects of Hurricane Beryl were devastating鈥攔oofs torn off, homes displaced, families struggling to pick up the pieces. The devastation was felt in every corner of the country, especially in schools where students’ educational journeys had already been disrupted by the challenges of the pandemic and the volcanic eruption.

But even amidst these overwhelming obstacles, the spirit of the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines never faltered. And neither did 亚洲天堂, with the unwavering support of the Mustique Charitable Foundation. Together, we rallied to provide the support that was desperately needed to help schools, teachers, and students heal and move forward.

The Heart of Our Work: Students, Teachers, and Communities

This partnership has never been just about donating books. It鈥檚 about transforming lives鈥攐ne book, one lesson, one smile at a time. From our Literacy Links, Enna Bullock and Yvette Pompey, who tirelessly visited schools, to the communities that came together in unexpected ways, every step of this journey has been powered by the belief that education is the key to a brighter tomorrow.

Key Highlights from the Year: A Journey of Hope and Determination

1. Bringing Libraries Back to Life

Several school libraries鈥攊ncluding those at Paget Farm Government, Mary Hutchinson Primary, and Stephanie Browne Primary鈥攚ere devastated by the storm. While some schools remain physically closed, learning hasn鈥檛 stopped. Students impacted by the storm received disaster relief take-home care packages of books from Hands, and where classrooms were relocated, books followed.

At Paget Farm, the library is now once again a place of discovery and joy. Children are back in their building, flipping through fresh pages, exploring new ideas, and rebuilding their routines. It鈥檚 a small sign of stability in a world that鈥檚 shifted under their feet.

2. Literacy in Action

It wasn鈥檛 just about books; it was about bringing learning to life. From “Hats off to Reading” week to creative early childhood education events, Hands worked to ignite a love for learning in every student. Through read-aloud sessions, comprehension games, and interactive storytelling, we reminded children that education could still be a source of joy, even in the face of adversity. This year, we watched students who had lost so much begin to rediscover the power of their imagination, their curiosity, and their potential.

3. The Importance of Our Teachers

Teachers are the unsung heroes of every community, and in St. Vincent, they continue to show up with tremendous resilience. Despite facing personal hardships, these dedicated educators continued to pour their hearts into their students鈥 futures. In partnership with the Ministry of Education, Hands supported training for new library workers鈥攅nsuring that schools had the tools and skills necessary to foster a love for reading. With Hands鈥 assistance, many schools also hosted professional development opportunities for educators to strengthen their teaching strategies and support their students鈥 academic growth.

4. Disaster Relief, Delivered with Love

When Hurricane Beryl struck, it was clear that our work wasn鈥檛 just about books. We had to act quickly to ensure that children鈥攚ho had already lost so much鈥攃ould get back to learning. We were able to provide more than 6,500 books, along with essential school supplies, to schools that had been severely impacted. It wasn鈥檛 just about replenishing what was lost鈥攊t was about showing our students, teachers, and communities that they weren鈥檛 alone. Through our partnership with MCF, the relief materials arrived in time to make a difference, ensuring that learning could continue, even in the midst of crisis.

A Remarkable Ally: The National Public Library

One of the quiet heroes behind this year鈥檚 success was the National Public Library, under the leadership of Director Mrs. Michelle King. When space and logistics became a challenge, Mrs. King immediately opened the doors鈥攍iterally and figuratively.

The library became a vital hub:

  • Storage space was offered for the arrival of books and disaster relief supplies.
  • Regular programming logistics were shifted to accommodate the massive sorting and boxing effort.
  • Library staff stepped up to assist with packing, lifting, and preparing deliveries鈥攊ncluding those bound for the Grenadines.

And when it came time to gather and celebrate, the conference room served as the setting for our February 2025 handover ceremony.

This partnership showcased the best of what community can be: flexible, collaborative, and rooted in service. To Mrs. King and the entire staff鈥攜our generosity made this work possible, and we are so grateful.

A Moment of Celebration: The Power of Community

In February 2025, we came together for a handover ceremony at the National Public Library to celebrate this year of rebuilding, recovery, and resilience. It was a moment of triumph for every teacher, student, and community member who had fought so hard to keep learning alive. As Enna Bullock, our Literacy Link, shared with the audience, 鈥淲e are not just handing over books; we are handing over hope.鈥

The ceremony was more than just an event鈥攊t was a reminder that together, we can overcome anything. With the generosity of the Mustique Charitable Foundation, the strength of the Ministry of Education, and the tireless efforts of 亚洲天堂, we鈥檝e been able to make real, lasting change.

A Lasting Impact: Looking Toward the Future

The journey is far from over. This year, we planted seeds of hope, but it鈥檚 just the beginning. We continue to support the children, teachers, and communities of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, working together to ensure that literacy remains at the heart of every child鈥檚 future. And with the ongoing support of the Mustique Charitable Foundation, we are confident that we can continue to nurture these efforts for years to come.

As we look to the future, we are filled with hope. We know that every book delivered, every classroom restored, and every smile we see on a student鈥檚 face is a small but meaningful step toward a better tomorrow. And we couldn鈥檛 do it without the incredible partnership we have with MCF. Together, we are more than just supporters鈥攚e are part of a community dedicated to creating lasting change.

Here鈥檚 to a future where every child in St. Vincent and the Grenadines can pick up a book, open it, and see endless possibilities.

Join us in transforming lives, one classroom at a time.

This week, 亚洲天堂 and the greater Eastern Caribbean lost a dear friend. Sir Robert Barrett, a visionary leader and devoted philanthropist, passed away on March 6, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, community-building, and unwavering dedication to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean.

Sir Robert was more than just a successful hotelier鈥攈e was a man who believed in the power of opportunity, education, and human connection. Through his leadership in the tourism industry, he helped shape Antigua and Barbuda鈥檚 economy, creating jobs and fostering a sense of pride in the local community. His resorts鈥攊ncluding The Verandah, Pineapple Beach Club, Hammock Cove, and St. James鈥檚 Club鈥攚eren鈥檛 just destinations for travelers; they were sources of livelihood for thousands of Antiguans and Barbudans over the past four decades. Sir Robert Barrett鈥檚 impact as a hotelier expanded across the Caribbean, and included an impressive portfolio of resorts not only in Antigua, but also in Panama, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, and Barbados.

But it was his heart for people, especially the most vulnerable, that truly defined his impact. Sir Robert was deeply committed to supporting children, particularly those with special needs, ensuring they had access to the resources they needed to thrive. His generosity extended far beyond business鈥攈is investments in education and literacy, including his steadfast support of 亚洲天堂, helped bring the joy of books and reading to countless children. In 2001, Sir Robert and Elite Island Resorts established the Wishing Well Foundation which continues on as a powerful vehicle for helping underprivileged children and adults throughout Antigua and the rest of the Caribbean.

鈥淪ir Robert Barrett was deeply devoted to building his community. On any given day, you could meet someone whose life had been touched by him,鈥 shared Amanda Sherlip, Executive Director of 亚洲天堂. 鈥淗is care and dedication to the personal development of individuals and the broader community were a true reflection of his generous spirit.

We were profoundly inspired by his commitment to serving vulnerable communities, especially children with special needs. Through his friendship and generosity, 亚洲天堂 has been able to bring the joy of new books, reading, and literacy support to thousands of children in Antigua and Barbuda.

Sir Robert Barrett helped build a better Antigua, and we are deeply grateful for the countless children and families he uplifted through his kindness and love.鈥

Leah Garratt, a close friend of Sir Robert and Board Chairperson of 亚洲天堂, spoke of the profound ways Sir Robert changed lives:

鈥淏ecause of Rob, so many lives were changed and saved. A friend called me from Antigua crying, remembering how he had helped her and her children. There are so many stories of his generosity and love for his employees and friends. He was a dear friend, and I was honored to collaborate with him over the years, working to provide care and support to the hundreds of lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.鈥

His commitment to Antigua and Barbuda was recognized at the highest level when he was knighted in 2023, a reflection of the immense gratitude and admiration felt by those he served so selflessly.

We at 亚洲天堂 were fortunate to call him a friend and partner in our mission. His generosity helped us establish and sustain school libraries across Antigua and Barbuda, ensuring that thousands of children not only had access to brand-new books but also welcoming spaces to read, learn, and dream. Through his support, we strengthened literacy programs, provided critical resources to students and teachers, and helped build a culture of reading that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Sir Robert Barrett鈥檚 passing is a tremendous loss, but his impact will endure through the lives he touched and the institutions he strengthened. His kindness, vision, and dedication to uplifting others will never be forgotten.

We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the many who loved him. Today, we join thousands of friends throughout the world in recognizing and memorialzing Sir Robert Barrett. Rest in peace, dear friend. Your legacy lives on.

The memorial service for Sir Robert A. Barrett KCN will be held on Friday 23rd May 2025 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium听at听10.00am

Remembering Jake Beddoe

By Niki Beddoe

Thanksgiving has always been one of our favorite holidays to celebrate together as a family. In 2023, we had our most memorable one that we will never forget.

My son, Jake, served in the Peace Corps in the Eastern Caribbean during 2018-2019 and was stationed in St. Vincent. He traveled throughout the Grenadines, speaking highly of his travels and experiences. After Jake passed in 2020, I knew I had to take our family there, as it would make him happy for us to visit these islands that held such a special place in his heart. In 2023, we finally made the trip to St. Vincent and Bequia, a small island off its coast.

Jake was deeply impacted by his host family and the children and staff at Diamond Government School, where he worked. He even booked a trip back for April 2020, which to his extreme disappointment was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. He shared with us the beauty of Bequia, where he vacationed during his service. He often spoke of his desire to take us there one day.

After finding the perfect time when our entire family could make the journey, and making sure the pandemic wouldn鈥檛 affect our travel plans, we booked our stay at Bequia Beach Hotel 鈥 Jake鈥檚 favorite spot on the island. I shared our plans with Amanda at 亚洲天堂, who quickly connected us with Yvette Pompey and Enna Bullock, her Literacy Links in St. Vincent. Together, we worked to prepare an itinerary for us to visit Jake鈥檚 school and host family. They wanted to make sure our experience was the best and covered everything that we wished to do during our visit. They certainly did not disappoint! Yvette and her husband, Mr. Pompey, greeted us at the ferry on the morning of our visit, and off we went鈥

Our first stop was Diamond Government School, where we were met with the warmest greeting. The principal, Ms. Baynes, took us on a tour to each classroom and the children welcomed us with open arms and many hugs! As we made our way through the school, we noticed some of the staff wearing Jake鈥檚 commemorative t-shirts that were shipped over a few years earlier, and his t-shirt was also hanging up on the library wall. These kind gestures touched our hearts and left us speechless.

We spent a long time in the library where Jake worked tirelessly organizing books and creating a welcoming display that reflected his own love of reading. It moved me to spend time in that library, in the exact same spot where Jake had spent most of his days during his Peace Corps service. At the end of our school visit, we were treated to an elaborate lunch spread filled with delicious local cuisine. Many laughs were shared as the children braided Carly and Amy鈥檚 hair and crowded around Kirk, passing notes and drawings to them. The warmth and love that the staff and children at Diamond Government School displayed towards us made such an indelible impression.

Next stop was Diamond Village to see Jake鈥檚 host mom, Yvette Harry, and his host brothers, Joshua and Caleb. They are located down the street from the little pink house where Jake lived during his service. We also visited with extended family that lives across the street from his host family. Such warm, lovely, people and we knew instantly why Jake鈥檚 affection for them grew so quickly. We were shown the cocoa trees in their yard as a family member was working on her home-made hot pepper sauce, which was quite a sight to see! They sent us home with cocoa beans and a recipe for hot cocoa for us to enjoy over the upcoming holidays, along with a bottle of pepper sauce. Both of which were enthusiastically received with love and gratitude!

Thanksgiving Day was spent the Caribbean way 鈥 on the water, surrounded by new friends radiating warmth and love, eating local foods, and cheering to Jake with rum punches.

It was a pleasure and a privilege spending time with so many wonderful people during our time in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It was surreal to experience what I had only dreamed of since Jake passed on. 亚洲天堂 turned my vision into a reality. Our visit to the school and our special time spent with Jake’s host family far exceeded my expectations. Somewhere amidst the stories, tears and joy, much needed healing took place. This trip will forever be engraved in our hearts.

Jake Beddoe’s life and legacy remain a blessing. 亚洲天堂 carries on Jake’s love, intention, and generous spirit through which supports thousands of children, families, and educators through library and literacy programs in the Eastern Caribbean.

Moving Literacy Forward in
St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Thanks to 亚洲天堂 and its collaboration with our great friends at the Mustique Charitable Foundation, libraries and schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines are active and thriving. Working together, our organizations have provided extensive literacy training and distributed books to schools of all sizes in the last few years despite disruptions in the islands caused by COVID, dengue fever outbreaks, and the eruption of La Soufriere.听听

We know that our investment in SVG is yielding powerful outcomes in the form of a joy of learning and literacy. We feel encouraged and motivated by these accomplishments and believe you will, as well. Read on to hear the inspiring story of literacy growth in SVG so far this academic year.听

Tapping Into the Power of Community

This year, with the blessing of the Ministry of Education, Hands shifted its long-standing practice of providing onsite trainings to offering a series of hubs that leaned into the power of community cohorts. Hands worked with community and education partners to identify and secure facilities where we could host groups of up to 25 library workers, including teachers, librarians, Peace Corps volunteers, and government YES (Youth Employment Service Programme) or SET (Supportive Education and Training Programme) workers (apprentices).

SVG Literacy Links Enna Bullock and Yvette Pompey led the four sessions. Ninety-five (95) participants representing 51 primary schools from across Saint Vincent and even a library apprentice who traveled as far as the Grenadine island of Canouan attended the half-day training in the resource center in Barrouallie. Hands Director Amanda Sherlip helped to plan the cohort training model in her capacity as Program Director; she was pleased to be on-island to participate in the fourth and final training in the series.

The trainings covered the librarian role, available support services provided by the National Public Library, and how to prepare well for students鈥 library time. These development opportunities helped fulfill our larger goal for Saint Vincent, which was to ensure that all schools returned to a pre-pandemic new normal while allowing the team to build on one another鈥檚 knowledge and skill sets. The experience outpaced our greatest expectations.

From Collaboration to Sustained Implementation

In these coaching sessions, 亚洲天堂 employed a highly effective strategy of individualized collaboration to maximize efficiency and minimize resource waste. The teachers displayed high levels of enthusiasm and actively shared their experiences and insights during the sessions thanks to this personalized approach. In this way, participants learned from each other. This collaborative atmosphere promoted learning and growth to a high degree.

The impact of the training extended beyond the sessions themselves, with participants expressing hope and commitment to implementing what they听 learned in their schools. Post-program evaluations consistently revealed high levels of buy-in, indicating a lasting impact that carried on for several months. This positive feedback underscores the effectiveness of 亚洲天堂’s approach in generating enthusiasm and driving meaningful change within school communities.

Specific trainings and events organized by 亚洲天堂 served as catalysts for further improvement in school libraries. By inviting representatives from schools to participate, the Literacy Links provided targeted support and guidance that aligned with the unique needs of each institution. These workshops not only motivated schools to enhance their library facilities, but also empowered participants to become advocates and evangelists for literacy within their own communities.

亚洲天堂 team members also followed up with school leadership. By maintaining open lines of communication and providing resources such as workshop materials and PowerPoint presentations, they ensured that the momentum generated during the training was sustained over time. This collaborative approach laid the groundwork for continued success and growth, garnering support from key stakeholders such as the Chief and the Ministry of Education.

The evaluations conducted by 亚洲天堂 highlight the unprecedented impact of our training programs. On-site evaluations revealed positive feedback from 77 percent of the participants, while post-evaluation surveys provided valuable insights into the implementation and effectiveness of the training. With comprehensive feedback from 36 school principals and leaders, 亚洲天堂 continues to refine and improve their approach, ensuring that their efforts result in tangible benefits for school libraries and the communities they serve through the Caribbean Literacy and School Support (CLASS) program.

Handing Over Ceremony 鈥楥harts a Brighter Path鈥

The annual Handing Over Ceremony of books and other resources was held on October 20, 2023 at the National Public Library Conference Room with the theme 鈥淐harting a Brighter Path for Child Literacy.鈥 Even amidst the busyness of Independence Day preparations, many of the school principals we invited to receive books and floor mats during the ceremony were able to attend.

At the event, Senior Education Officer Mrs. Mavis Joseph represented the Ministry of Education. She offered brief remarks and expressed sincere thanks to the organization for their yearly donation of books to schools. Ms. Natalia Gill, Project Director of the Mustique Charitable Foundation, also addressed the principals and spoke of the importance of being literate in today鈥檚 society. She also expressed deep appreciation to Literacy Links Mrs. Enna Bullock and Mrs. Yvette Pompey for their role in creating and sustaining libraries throughout the island. Mrs. Michelle King Campbell, Director of Libraries, gave a brief address and endorsed the need for us to work together to build a reading community.

Amanda Sherlip reaffirmed Hands鈥 commitment to charting a brighter path. She reflected particularly on the resiliency and inspiring progress that has occurred in St. Vincent and how children used their beautiful voices to express the importance of reading while their parents and other adults united around the library efforts. Amanda also shared the impact of the country鈥檚 artistic and poetic spirit on promoting literacy.

Hands Across The Sea

鈥淎t the heart of everything we do is a deep commitment to the basic fundamental right all children have to read. We know that when children have access to books and stories, it unlocks their limitless potential. We dream of and dedicate ourselves to working towards a world where children can achieve anything they set their minds to.鈥 鈥 Mrs. Amanda Sherlip, Executive Director

The stars of these events are always the children, and this year鈥檚 event didn鈥檛 disappoint. The children dazzled us with their expressive performance and readings. One student from Belmont Government School declaimed from a handmade big book, expressing the creativity of our students. This shining moment was topped off when students from the CW Prescod Government School stole the hearts of the audience with their melodious rendition of 鈥淟ean on Me鈥 on steel pan. Mrs. Sheridan Edwards thanked the principals for coming, followed by a heartfelt thank you from Mrs. Yvette Pompey.

Several media representatives covered the occasion, which was publicized on national television and other news media.

Book Distribution and library sustainability

For the 2023-24 school year, Hands, in collaboration with the Mustique Charitable Foundation, has provided a donation of roughly 2,600 new, world-class books in support of 11 primary and secondary schools in SVG. In addition to these books, Mustique Charitable Foundation committed to backing the vital work to ensure Literacy Link endorsement remains available in support of all 亚洲天堂 partner libraries in SVG.

As a part of the CLASS program, 93 Hands partner schools receive ongoing library sustainability programming, which includes onsite supports, visits, mentorship, student librarian programs, and trainings. Additionally, as is customary, each year a number of schools are selected based on need, readiness, and initiatives to receive new books. This year鈥檚 book shipment arrived in late October, 2023, and after clearing customs and sorting the 2 pallets of boxes, distribution of books to schools commenced in November, 2023. Schools that were not on the list to receive books were extremely grateful when we presented a box of World Books and a package of nonfiction books to them during routine visits. Principals were thrilled by this generous initiative that boosted their book collections.听

Literacy in Action at Local Schools

To highlight the impact of Hands鈥 work in SVG, Belmont Government School and New Prospect Primary School come to mind. Belmont held a Literacy Week recently. A 鈥榬ead off鈥 exercise held throughout the entire school climaxed the week. In this activity, students from different grades prepared and read stories to other classrooms in their building. At the end of the story, the reader asked the class questions they had prepared, while the teachers sat in the back to allow the children to lead the reading time. It was a great success and helped promote literacy leadership in the building.

SVG, Belmont Government School

The Belmont students in Grade 5 are particularly enjoying series books, such as the Nancy Drew series. Many of the girls have already read all the titles. Other books they have enjoyed recently include Wings of Fire, Bad Kitty, and School Daze. The Belmont kids are getting excited about reading, and we鈥檙e excited for what this will mean for their future life and success.听

Another shining example of Hands鈥 work in the SVG comes from New Prospect Primary School.听Here as well, the students in Grade 5 really shine in their love for fresh new books. When they finish reading them, they exchange the titles among themselves to keep the reading going. The students and teachers at the school enjoy their little library and are very grateful to 亚洲天堂 for their donation of interesting books.

At New Prospect, student librarians Dzhane Jacobs and Kozarni Samuel from Grade 5 both enjoy reading and look forward to hours of reading from the new book collection. As young librarians, they help students choose age-appropriate books and keep the shelves tidy so students can find the books that interest them.听

Training Young Librarians

Training students as young librarians is a key function for effective school libraries. Shared leadership among students helps them learn responsibility, model good behaviour, learn from one another, and build a culture of healthy reading habits. This year so far, Gomea Methodist School trained 10 students as young librarians, Georgetown Government School trained 16 students, and trained 11 students to provide student staffing for their upgraded library spaces and lending programs. The libraries run more efficiently with this extra student help, and the Literacy Links are especially grateful to the students that they are eager to help with these important responsibilities.

Thanks To Our Partners

We give our deepest thanks to Mustique Charitable Foundation for their unwavering support for children鈥檚 literacy and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. With the partnership of Mustique Charitable Foundation, 亚洲天堂 reaches nearly 20,000 children in need each year through school and community libraries and lending programs, as well as critical disaster response initiatives. Mustique Charitable Foundation and 亚洲天堂鈥檚 shared vision for charting a brighter future for children and SVG continues to be an inspiration and a driving force that enables our work and impact.

Our sincere gratitude is extended to the Ministry of Education and the Customs teams who helped ensure our book deliveries cleared Customs and were transported and delivered safely and without concern. The Ministry鈥檚 endorsement, partnership, and trust continue to be an invaluable resource in enabling timely and effective implementation of literacy programs in partner schools and communities.

We want to express an additional thanks to the National Public Library for storing the books and providing a safe space for Literacy Links Bullock and Pompey to sort out the boxes and make book packages for distribution. We especially appreciated one library staff member for their extra help packaging and moving a heavy load of books.

The Library also kindly hosted Hands for the Handing Over ceremony and 2 zonal workshops in their conference, and we are grateful for that hospitality. In addition, the Director Mrs. Michelle King-Campbell allowed us to use their projector and screen and equipped us with a technician to help in the workshops. Ms. Dana Neverson from the library worked along with us to facilitate a segment of the Library/literacy workshop to empower teachers about accessing reading material from the Public Library.

Fostering Inclusive Education for All Abilities

This month we celebrate Developmental Disability Awareness Month to highlight the beautiful array of people and children who make up the constellation of our lives and communities.

Stigma still persists around developmental disabilities, special education, and accessibility. New models and approaches to assisting people with all abilities are becoming more mainstream as the movement for neurodiversity and neurodivergence becomes a part of design language. 亚洲天堂 is pleased to support children with disabilities of all kinds through its infusion of relevant books and materials into local libraries. Read on to find out why this issue is so critical.

Supporting All Learning Abilities

UNICEF estimates that there are 240 million children with disabilities worldwide.

鈥淟ike all children, children with disabilities have ambitions and dreams for their futures. Like all children, they need quality education to develop their skills and realize their full potential.鈥 - UNICEF

Hands is fully committed to this goal, and it鈥檚 important to understand the challenges SEN learners face.

Research, approach, and treatment around developmental disabilities is often particular to cultural and geographical contexts. In the US, the developmental disabilities movement has shifted into a broader conversation around neurodiversity and neurodivergence. In the neurodiversity movement, we can move away from frameworks that overly pathologize cognitive differences. Through the lens of neurodiversity, specific mental and developmental differences are viewed through the lens of divergence, or 鈥渄ifference鈥;听 a person may be treated as neurotypical or neuroatypical relative to different capabilities and limitations.

The gifts of children with autism.

In the communities where we work across the Eastern Caribbean, the term Special Education Needs (SEN), prevails as the current terminology for working with adults and children who have learning and developmental disabilities.

While 亚洲天堂 has long had a presence in both schools where students with special needs are enrolled, as well as in specific schools solely dedicated to children with special needs, we have eagerly awaited the opportunity to begin a focused effort in building library and literacy programs that could more adequately meet the interests and efforts of teachers and learners in the region. That time has come.

Partnering with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States

Supporting new strategies around SEN has been a value at Hands for the last several years. In 2020, 亚洲天堂 reviewed plans from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and in our capacity as a partner and advisor, committed to supporting the implementation of the new education sector strategy, which includes the overarching goal to

鈥淚mprove the quality of access to Early Childhood Education and Special Education by increasing access to quality pre-primary services, improving services for vulnerable children, and enhancing teacher professional development.鈥

Knowing sweeping programmatic initiatives, public outreach, and training were on the horizon, Hands readied itself to partner with the OECS as they undertook major strategic and curriculum growth to pursue a harmonized approach to creating more opportunities for inclusive and accessible learning.

Identifying Learning Gaps to Seek Solutions

In September 2022, OECS Education Management Unit requested the partnership of 亚洲天堂, specifically for the commission’s Program for Education Advancement and Relevant Learning鈥揷ommonly known as the PEARL Initiative. Throughout the first term of the 2022-23 school year, Hands lent its expertise to a multinational, multi-stakeholder effort to identify and ultimately support the needs and gaps of local student and youth populations with special education needs.
Early identification and treatment are key.

The survey revealed the challenges, circumstances, and opportunities for addressing education equity gaps in the region; over 12 percent of children in Latin America and the Caribbean have moderate-to-severe disabilities. In a population of approximately 120,000, this means up to 15,000 children may have Special Education Needs. Stakeholders believe that the most common SEN in the school-aged population of the OECS are Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, with these SEN more common in boys than girls. Many students may also have 2 or more co-occurring conditions.

These issues impact oral reading, reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. Unfortunately, many of these children have not been formally diagnosed, so providing services for these vulnerable learners has been difficult. Almost 6 in 10 student respondents indicated that they had learning difficulties.

Providing Equal Access

Inclusive education effectively ensures that all children have the same chance they need and deserve to develop skills to succeed and thrive. According to UNICEF, 鈥淚nclusive education allows students of all backgrounds to learn and grow side by side, to the benefit of all.鈥 亚洲天堂 is committed to making sure children see themselves in the stories they read, and that they have access to vital books and resources that are targeted to their interests, needs, and reading levels.

Through a harmonized approach to inclusive education, 亚洲天堂 is collaborating with schools across the Eastern Caribbean beginning in the 2023-24 school year to build targeted book collections and recommended reading lists that support all students in libraries throughout the region under our flagship CLASS program.

Beginning with 5 schools in Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Hands curated a collection of special education books and resources that would more fully support inclusive learning goals while providing students an opportunity to connect and reflect upon characters whose stories could be a window into their own lives and experiences. These culturally responsive texts are both skills-based and topically oriented to maximize interest for readers and young learners.

Recipient schools have been reaching out with highest levels of praise and enthusiasm over these donated collections. These books will be available in school libraries and resource centers and are an accompaniment to new policies and educational trainings that are being implemented across the islands.

In the 2024-25 school year, Hands will begin to scale these starter SEN library collections. A SEN resource collection guide will also be provided to the OECS Education Management Unit and the Ministry of Education in each of our operating countries to further support their mutual efforts for a harmonized approach to targeted education intervention.

Hands is pleased to support students and schools through the donation of relevant books and materials that help ensure that all children, regardless of learning ability, has the chance to thrive and grow.

Christmas in Nevis - Family Literacy for the Holiday Season!

Christmas came early in Nevis this year!

The Nevis Public Library in collaboration with 亚洲天堂 presented a first-of-its-kind holiday pajama night and parents鈥 workshop on Monday December 17th. Thirty-one (31) children ages 3-7 were accompanied by 15 adults to experience the love and joy found in the library.

The festive event utilized both floors of the library. The eager children entered the library in their pajamas ready for an evening of adventure and fun. The young students, already familiar with the books from their school鈥檚 亚洲天堂 Early Pages Programme, were excited to spend time with new and familiar friends from the community.听

During their sessions, kids were taken on a special literacy journey, delighted and engaged by stories, rhymes, jingles, and even a puppet show!

Mr. Kevin Barrett, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resources (and former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education) joined as a very special guest, and led the children through a read aloud of the classic story The Little Engine That Could. Six of Nevis鈥 11 preschools were represented through this event.

Upstairs, 亚洲天堂 Literacy Link Mrs. Palsy Wilkin led a session for 15 parents (and a few babies, too!)鈥 many of whom also came to elevate the event in their cutest holiday pajamas. The session was a perfect opportunity to share and carry out the work of the Early Pages Programme which is currently active throughout Saint Kitts and Nevis.

During the adult session, the parents were given support toward making the connections between books and daily life, linking book concepts with necessary skills development, building healthy foundations for reading hygiene, and reinforcing the importance of parental involvement for the lasting impacts of children鈥檚 literacy.

Some key points driven home during the session included:

  • Roles and responsibilities for parents in their children鈥檚 literacy journey
  • The importance of books and the different types of books children read
  • Demonstrations of reading aloud to students using Big Books as well as small books
  • The importance and impact of reading to children beginning at a very early age.

The parents received an orientation on 10 Tips for Reading Aloud with Children and were sent home with a worksheet to continue supporting this effort. At the end of the session, all parents signed the 亚洲天堂 Parent Agreement Form (included in the Early Pages Programme Manual) and also signed up to be members of the public library.

The parents were very receptive to the highly interactive session, and appreciation was expressed by all who had the opportunity to attend.

鈥淎s a result of this session I am highly motivated to go into the preschools in January to continue working with the teachers and parents. 鈥 鈥 Mrs. Palsy Wilkin, 亚洲天堂 Literacy Link

The session is a high note for 亚洲天堂, literacy, and Nevis as we all take some time to reconnect with our families and recharge during the holiday season. We thank Nevis Public Library Head Librarian Mrs. Anastasia Parris-Morton, and Deputy Librarian Mrs. Shea Wilkin (former VOJN principal and longtime Hands partner)听for the invitation to participate in this special evening, and we commend the parents for taking the opportunity to learn, engage, and connect through children鈥檚 literacy.

Ground Breaking Early Childhood Literacy Manual Launched for Eastern Caribbean

亚洲天堂 & Sandals Foundation Partnership to anchor literacy in the preschool environment.

The Eastern Caribbean鈥檚 first Universal Emergent Literacy program has been officially launched. The manual, titled Early Pages Program comes after a three-year pilot in Grenada and Nevis, and will immediately begin reaching some of the region鈥檚 most vulnerable students through dozens of preschools serving children ages 3-5.

An initiative of 亚洲天堂, the Sandals Foundation helped to bring this important project to life through a USD $36,000 grant that fully funded the creation of a print and digital programmatic manual to support more than 500 preschools in the Eastern Caribbean -bringing much-needed aid to thousands of children and educators in the region.

鈥淭he vision is for the manual to become a fundamental resource that empowers preschool teachers and Early Childhood Units,鈥 says Amanda Sherlip, Executive Director at 亚洲天堂. 鈥淲e hope this will be a transformational early literacy program in schools and communities.鈥

The Early Pages Programme (EPP) aims to raise childhood literacy levels and prepare children for lifelong success through 3 intentional actions: integrating literacy as an explicit aspect of the preschool environment; increasing parental engagement; and building awareness and community participation in early childhood literacy.

鈥淭he EPP manual and programmatic framework works in harmony with existing regional curriculum and assessment goals, and anchors literacy as an explicit aspect of the preschool environment, while supporting teacher professional development and readying students for primary school. In addition to the manual, the program relies on a preschool library collection which consists of Big Books, board books, and individual reader and lending sets, a series of orientations and trainings, and ongoing mentorship support, all of which are provided to partnering schools through 亚洲天堂,鈥 says Sherlip.

The program鈥檚 early pilot in Grenada and subsequent soft launch in Nevis both exceeded Hands鈥 expectations with increased parental engagement, community participation, teacher professional development, and student development. The manual has already made quite an impact in the region, with 亚洲天堂 invited to present the program to the 12 Eastern Caribbean countries attending the recently held 8th Annual Meeting of Early Childhood Leaders hosted in Barbados this October in partnership with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the United Nations Children鈥檚 Fund (UNICEF).

All conference participants left with a program manual, and Hands is already in planning talks with several countries for the timing and strategy for launching the program in the upcoming school year.

鈥淭hrough this partnership and investment, 亚洲天堂 has set its vision for scaling this vital program throughout all 6 of its operating countries. We also aim to make the program publicly available through Open Access to the digital manual.鈥

鈥淪ince the Covid-19 pandemic, early childhood leaders across the region have reported a staggering rise in cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges facing young children. The EPP framework encourages a personal, interactive, and highly participatory approach to early childhood engagement. At its core, it supports many of the most fundamental developmental needs of children at this very vulnerable stage in their growth. An area that the Sandals Foundation sees as fundamental to the growth of students.鈥

The philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts International has been a longstanding partner of 亚洲天堂, investing in capacity building workshops for parents and educators, as well as seeing to the creation and outfitting of literacy infrastructure in the eastern Caribbean since 2013.

Preparations for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year is already underway with 66 schools across the islands of Grenada, Dominica, Saint Kitts, and Nevis set to launch their programs with the transformative manual by their side.

In the 2022-23 school year, 亚洲天堂, under the leadership of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) PEARL Initiative, took a significant stride towards education reprioritization. The overarching goal was clear: “improve the quality of access to early childhood education and special education by increasing access to quality pre-primary services, improving services for vulnerable children, and enhancing teacher professional development.”

International researchers have estimated that 12.6% of children in the Latin America and Caribbean region bear the weight of moderate-to-severe disabilities. To put it in perspective, within a student population of approximately 120,000, this translates to the possibility of as many as 15,000 students with Special Education Needs (SEN).

Vernest Mack Quote | 亚洲天堂 |Fostering Inclusive Lliteracy

The majority of school-aged children in the OECS who are believed to have learning disabilities lack formal diagnoses. This complicates the provision of services for these vulnerable children.听While diagnoses are scarce, stakeholders have indicated that the three most common SEN in the school-aged OECS population are learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Research also uncovers that these three SEN are significantly more prevalent in boys and often co-occur with other SEN, creating a dynamic where students may have two or more co-occurring conditions.

Based on stakeholder perceptions, the four most common types of learning difficulties are associated with oral reading, reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. Shockingly, almost 6 in 10 Secondary Students who participated in the survey reported that they grapple with learning difficulties in these areas.

The words of UNICEF resonate deeply: “Inclusive education allows students of all backgrounds to learn and grow side by side, to the benefit of all.”

The aim of 亚洲天堂 is clear: to ensure that every child not only reads but sees themselves in the stories they read. We're committed to providing books and resources tailored to each child's interests, needs, and reading level.

亚洲天堂 is coordinating efforts with schools throughout the Eastern Caribbean. We have been diligently crafting targeted book collections and recommended reading lists, empowering every student. These treasures will find their home in school libraries and resource centers, complementing new policies and educational training being implemented across the islands.

As Vernest Mack shares, visiting students at the Victory Centre in Antigua is always a unique experience. These special needs students eagerly anticipate every appointment, brimming with enthusiasm and excitement. Large “Big Books” hold a special place in their hearts. As Vernest reads, discussions spark, exploring content, corresponding pictures, and even predicting outcomes.

She describes, “Large illustrations and colorful pictures always capture and hold the interest of the students.” After the reading and discussion, the students yearn to explore the books on their own, encouraged to share among themselves. This moment is a highlight, and some students even ask if they can keep the books. Vernest laments, “It’s heartbreaking that I cannot do so, as I need them to read for other students.” She passionately believes that having more “special needs friendly books” at their disposal would encourage these young minds to explore books independently.

Vernest shares her elation at a few older students’ transition to the regular school system. Their reading skills have improved, and they eagerly anticipate further visits. Vernest beams with pride, saying, “I am extremely proud of them.”
